Every winter, normally December to March, tens of thousands of beautiful migrating flamingos visit the salt lakes of Larnaca!
Larnaca Salt Lake is a protected area, and one of the most important European waterfowl habitats. Larnaca Medieval Fort was built in the late 12th century AD by the Byzantines to protect the harbour of Larnaca, and another portion was later added on by King James I of Britain to make it a castle. It then became the Larnaca Medieval Castle.
It was used as a prison by the British and the western chamber was used for the execution of prisoners until 1948. It now has a Medieval Museum on the second floor. Larnaca was founded as the ancient city of Kition in the Late Bronze age, in 13th century BC. It has about 15000 years of history!
